using the usb on my router for a media nas now and i need more room and faster access for my files and computer. my kb and M are connected to both desktop and dock thru a kvm. This would require swapping the raid controller since the h700 wont allow me to bypass it initially. This is relevant for your Unraid system as it allows you to configure cache pools as RAID 1 for data mirroring or RAID 0 for speed. Btrfs is the only option if you want to use multiple drives in your Unraid cache pool.

Keep windows server and use Windows storage spaces for the parity. What makes Btrfs the perfect system for cache pools is the fact that it supports various levels of RAID in multi-drive mode. :for background info, i have three monitors, 2 of which are connected to a hp pavilion 13 thru a usbc dock, the third monitor is connected to switch, ps3, and gaming desktop. Stick with Windows server and go with hardware raid 6 (will have to get another drive). i assume there is someone on these forums that has or is running this setup, i need to know if it will work for an everyday driver. I dont want to spend the money on more parts just to try this.

#UNRAID SETUP MIRROR RAID HOW TO#

i do thing the community support package to install things should be included instead of having to figure out how to install it. Thus i'm going to catalogue some pointers and my experience, then go through a small tutorial for those of you who might be interested.

#UNRAID SETUP MIRROR RAID TRIAL#

i am really liking the trial unraid so far. Having set up unraid on my 872XT fairly painlessly and doing some tests to see if it was for me, i decided to try to install unraid on my H1288X, this one wasn't nearly as smooth. Unraid does not offer clustering, or HA support out of the box. I give unraid credit- the interface is beautiful, and very easy to navigate. Docker containers vs LXC Containers (Application virtualization vs OS virtualization) A MUCH nicer interface. truenas core worked but had many issues with smb and nfs but unraid has done that flawlessly. Unraid has its own storage system, which, works like raid, but, is not raid. this is the easiest and most reliable way. i also want to connect it to a monitor and my kvm to play games native. ubuntu is the os i am running on my laptop which is what will vnc or steam remote play into the windows vm. People either love of hate unRaid and most suggest either freenas or ubuntu server for the os from what I am finding. The windows vm would be faster on bare metal than in ubuntu. I will also be using this server for personal files and copies of old movies that I no longer have the physical copies of, thus the redundancy. If one drive goes out, the whole array is busted.

Raid 0, the data is spread across all drives with no redundancy. Basically whenever anything is written to the array, a copy also goes to the parity drive.

The basic rule is that the parity drive (ie drive that provides the data protection calculation) has to be the largest drive or youll limit the size of the data drives. yes unraid can take multiple drive sizes in any combo to maximize space utilization. Thanks for the reply! The raid is being taken into account for automatic redundancy. To answer some of your questions at a high level: 1. If you have any questions or if you need further elaboration on a specific part of the process let me know and I will get back to you immediately Enjoy the world of redundant arrays of independent disks (RAID). For Plex there isn't really any benefit as I have its transcoding drive on an SSD anyway and rarely ever actually NEED to transcode anyway. From here, you should be completely set up in whichever raid configuration (0 or 1) you chose. I honestly only see RAID as useful for video production, where you NEED really fast data transfer speeds. Yes it may seem an odd choice for a server, but I run desktops on it too (I run Newsbin under WINE on a VNC server) so it was just easier as it meant all the packages I needed for that were installed rather than having to put them on after. It certainly shouldn't be necessary for your usage scenario as I do much the same you plan to using Fedora Desktop. Personally I avoid RAID like the plague, its just not worth the headaches when something goes wrong IMO, but each to their own.

#UNRAID SETUP MIRROR RAID FULL#

UnRaid I would expect to be easier, but Ubuntu Server far more flexible as you have the full Ubuntu repo of software you can install on it.
